According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions must be reduced by 50 to 80 percent by 2050 to avoid dramatic consequences of global warming and any new strategy for reducing CO2 emission is required. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a potential solution to this and thus, the Australian Government has opened the AU$50m Carbon Capture, Use and Storage Development Fund as an initiative to support technology which the nation prioritizes under a plan to create jobs, cut energy costs and reduce emissions.
Among the companies that play a big part in reducing emission in Australia is Chevron-Gorgon Joint Venture team, where it is known as the world’s 19th large-scale CCS project that can capture CO2 up to the capacity of 3.4-4 Mtpa while injecting it to the Gorgon natural gas facility on Barrow Island, Western Australia. This project incorporates many leading design features that aimed at maximizing energy efficiency and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by about 40% or more than 100 million tonnes over the life of the injection project.
