Dear Industry & Friends,

As 2024 draws to a close, it is time to reflect on a remarkable year of progress and milestones.

AGA has been dedicated to the betterment of the industry and the community since our founding in 1925. Our not-for-profit structure ensures we remain impartial and focused solely on advancing safety, setting rigorous standards, testing for compliance and driving progress for the collective good. This year has been no exception and I am proud to share some key highlights with you.

Harmonisation Across the Tasman

The inclusion of the LCC27 connection in New Zealand regulations represents an important step in standardising LPG cylinder connections across Australia and New Zealand. This development strengthens safety, fosters industry cohesion, and enhances trans-Tasman collaboration to ensure seamless integration for manufacturers, installers, and consumers alike.

Connecting Green Hydrogen APAC 2024 Conference

AGA partnered with the Connecting Green Hydrogen APAC 2024 event in September this year. This influential conference brought together thousands of participants and key industry stakeholders highlighting the ongoing efforts to establish a sustainable hydrogen economy across the region.

Energy Efficiency Laboratory Milestone

This year marked the 11th anniversary of AGA’s energy efficiency laboratory. This facility has become a trusted resource which supports industry and government efforts to address climate change and advance energy efficiency. It continues to play a modest but vital role in fostering innovation and delivering meaningful outcomes for the sector.

Supporting Decarbonisation

Energy Networks Australia (ENA) published an analysis on decarbonising Australia’s gas system which highlighted the complementary roles of renewable gases, such as biomethane and green hydrogen. The report emphasised that renewable gases will be crucial in achieving Australia’s 2050 net-zero emissions target. Recommendations included a certification scheme for renewable gases, expanded hydrogen support programs, and a Renewable Gas Target for industry by 2030 to accelerate the transition.

Leadership Recognition

I am honoured to have been appointed Chairman of the Gas Appliances Certification Meeting (GACM) again for the next two years. The 13th GACM, held in Seoul, South Korea, brought together industry leaders from across the Western Pacific to discuss “The Grand Energy Transition and the Future of the Gas Appliance Industry.”

Global Representation

AGA was once again well-represented at the CSA Forum in China which strengthened global collaborations and aligning international safety standards to advance shared goals.

Hydrogen Standard Publication

A significant milestone was reached with the publication of SA TS 5390:2023 – Gas appliances — Hydrogen-fired gas appliances on 28 June 2024. This landmark standard sets the stage for regulatory frameworks around hydrogen combustion appliances and integrates with AS/NZS 5263.0.

Looking Ahead

As we approach AGA’s centenary in 2025, I couldn’t be more excited about this incredible milestone. It will be a time to reflect on our rich history and achievements while also setting the course for how we will continue shaping the industry for the next century. Plans are already underway for a special celebration to mark this occasion. We look forward to sharing this moment with select partners and contributors who have been instrumental in our journey.
