Expert committee advising ESV on energy safety issues

Earlier this year, the Victorian government created a special Technical Advisory Committee to advise Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) on important issues impacting the gas and electrical industries and to encourage improvements.

The Committee will provide expert advice on the functions of ESV, including, but not limited to:

* Issues relating to network safety and bushfire prevention and mitigation.

* Safety standards and compliance requirements for energy equipment, installations and electrical and gas fitting work.

* Safety implications arising from the operation of renewable energy sources.

* Investigation of events and incidents with implications for energy safety.

* Advice and guidance to the electrical and gas industry sectors and community in relation to energy safety.

The Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio approved the creation of the committee which will provide advice based on their experience, considering risks, hazards and consultation with the sectors and communities they represent.

The Committee will be chaired by Christine Williams – Economist, data scientist and company director.

AGA’s Managing Director and CEO, Mr Bill Tabourlos is the appointed Committee Member representing Business (Gas).

The other five appointments include, Elizabeth Perrone for Business (Electricity), Arron Harris for Employee (Electricity), Gary Bath for Employee (Gas), Emma Germano and Tina Hogarth-Clarke for the Victorian Community.

Hydrogen Appliance Testing and Development

AGA’s Hydrogen Test Centre is the largest and most sophisticated hydrogen testing facility of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Safety testing of appliances and components can be performed at any hydrogen and methane composition and at most domestic and commercial catering appliance gas consumptions. The propriety equipment used has been specifically designed to conduct the testing with up to 100% hydrogen and AGA’s specialist testing engineers are the most experienced in the country.

The test centre has assisted several gas product manufacturers and suppliers with their Hydrogen testing needs. The manufacturers have been assessing their gas products to find the optimal Hydrogen/Methane blend their appliances can tolerate. Some have also developed 100% Hydrogen appliances in anticipation of the transition from natural gas to natural gas/hydrogen blends and eventually 100% carbon-free emission hydrogen.

If you would like assistance with the development of your appliances to operate on Hydrogen or Hydrogen/Methane blends, please contact the AGA General Manager, Laboratory, Dennis Karafotias at lab@aga.asn.au.
