The Australian Gas Association (AGA), together with officials from the Korea Gas Safety Corporation, visited the Australian Gas Infrastructure Group’s (AGIG) HyHome project in Wollert, Victoria. The visit provided a close look at the role hydrogen can play in reshaping energy use in homes.
HyHome showcases practical applications of 100% hydrogen energy, including cooking, space heating, water heating and barbecuing. This initiative demonstrates how hydrogen can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life as a clean and efficient energy solution.
The tour was led by Robert Davis from AGIG who provided detailed insights into the home’s functionality. It was an inspiring demonstration of the possibilities of hydrogen-powered living and a clear example of how the gas industry can contribute to a sustainable energy future.
AGA’s Chairman, Mr Chris Devlin; Managing Director and CEO, Mr Bill Tabourlos, Director, Mr Chris Wealthy and AGA Testing Engineer, Mr Yongchan Kim were joined by officials from the Korea Gas Safety Corporation for the tour. Their presence underscores the growing global interest in hydrogen as a key energy source.
As the industry moves towards a cleaner energy landscape, this visit serves as a timely reminder of the need to prepare for a hydrogen-ready future. It is important to embrace the opportunities hydrogen offers and work together to drive sustainable energy solutions.
The 2024 National Hydrogen Strategy has been released by the Australian Government which includes a framework to position Australia as a global leader in the emerging hydrogen economy.
The key highlights of the strategy include:
* Australia to produce between 15 and 30 million tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2050.
* The strategy prioritises green hydrogen applications in sectors including (i) green metals, (ii) ammonia production, (iii) long-haul transport and (iv) power generation.
* The strategy identifies hydrogen as an important enabler for industrial decarbonisation that could offer tens of thousands of jobs and new opportunities for regional Australia.
* It aims to secure Australia’s role as a reliable hydrogen exporter by establishing trade partnerships. It also expands the Guarantee of Origin scheme for emissions certification.
* Investments in hydrogen hubs and precincts will promote co-location of production and demand to reduce costs and accelerate commercialisation.
Chris Bowen (Minister for Climate Change and Energy) emphasised that hydrogen is central to Australia’s energy transformation. He highlighted the strategy’s role in supporting the transition to renewable energy and strengthening Australia’s reputation as a stable and trusted energy partner.
This updated strategy includes input from extensive consultations with industry stakeholders, state and territory governments as well as international partners.
The 2024 National Hydrogen Strategy reaffirms Australia’s commitment to leveraging its abundant renewable resources and expertise to drive innovation and global leadership in the hydrogen economy.

Our main laboratory and headquarters at 66 Malcolm Road, Braeside VIC 3195, in Melbourne remains unchanged and continues to serve as the hub of our operations.
